Re: Offline files of db to new server using /DisasterRecovery

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Alan, Andy,

Thanks. Yes, knew can't have old and new up at same time. Wanted to keep
same name due to company-specific reasons. We ended up restoring from online
backup since copying offline files off of old server to temporary server
then to new server would have taken as long.

Interestingly, on another note, we ran into an unexpected problem running
setup.exe with /DisasterRecovery switch.
fyi, in case some of the info helps others in some way...

When we first migrated that office to E2K3, we did so by introducing new
E2K3 server into 5.5 Site. The 5.5 Site was really one 5.5 server running on
NT PDC (office was in own NT4 domain). We forgot to migrate the 5.5 service
account, so after we shut down 5.5 server we started getting 8213 errors in
E2K3 because now-non-existent 5.5 service account still present in AD config
for that Site. MS MVP here had us edit AD using adsiedit to remove affected
AG's msExchLegacyAccount, msExchLegacyDomain, msExchEncryptedPassword
attribute data related to 5.5 account (so = <not set>) and change
msExchAminGroup mode from 2 to 0 to set AG into pure 2003 mode. That got rid
of errors.

With AG in pure 2003 mode, we were left with a non-working SRS and so we set
ADC Config agreements (Config_CA, user and pf CAs) to "Never Replicate" so
ADC would not throw errors. Upon advice from MS we did not delete any of the
ADC CAs. (We no longer had the AD info from that OU replicating to our other
offices' 5.5 directories but we decided we could live with that since we
thought all would be migrated by yr-end (ha). Our HQ office is also running
SRS and all other AD info replicates using those CAs.)

Setup /DisasterRecovery must have read in AD references somewhere to the old
5.5 account because it presented us with a dialog box asking for the 5.5
account. The dialog box requested user, domain and password info, however,
the user and domain boxes were greyed out entirely (I assume because the
msExch attributes <not set>.) Only the password box was editable. Setup
refused to continue without that info. Catch-22.

Opened a case with MS PSS, who thinks the still-existing ADC config figured
somewhere into issue. He had us re-adsiedit AD to reset the affected AG's
msExch attributes to use a valid (existing AD) account and place AG once
again in mixed mode, then replicate the changes to all DCs. (One exception:
we did not set the msExchEncryptedPassword using adsiedit; the PSS tech had
us type it in during E2K3 Setup so as to be sure it was encrypted). When we
reran E2K3 Setup /DisasterRecovery, the boxes were no longer greyed out and
we could add the new 5.5 account info and finish Setup. (After Setup, we
noticed in ESM AG Properties General tab that the 5.5 account info was
back -- whereas after setting to pure 2003 mode it had disappeared --
indicating AG in mixed mode once again.)

Exchange seems to be running ok on the new server. We did get event 8213
error (see below) which KB 817202 says retype 5.5 password in Properties of
the affected AG. Doing so seems to have fixed that error, though immediately
after retyping/applying, we got event 9152 same error # (see below) and this
has repeated twice daily since. (Have email into MS PSS about it, since only
info found for fix 9152 with that error is also retyping password.)

MSExchangeFBPublish Event 8213 -- System Attendant Service failed to create
session for virtual machine SERVERNAMEHERE. The error number is 0x80090005.

MSExchangeSA Event 9152 -- Microsoft Exchange System Attendant reported an
error '0x80090005' in its DS Monitoring thread.

jremmc
