I've got my DNS configured correctly as per Bharat's reply, but I can't
ping or telnet to my static IP address! Would this be a setting in my
router I can switch on and off?


Either the router or your firewall could be blocking the ping. Were you able to TELNET to the static IP? That's what really matters, since that's what outside mail servers are doing (connecting to port 25).
