attachments *very* slow after new exchange installation

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

All,

We are running an Exchange 2003 server (sp1) on Windows 2003. The server
is also a Domain controller. We purchased a new server and installed Windows
2003 (with all patches) and installed Exchange 2003 as an additional e-mail
server. So far, so good. Both servers show in the Exchange System Manager.
The new system is *not* a domain controller. (I know, never should have been
in the first place). So I like the new setup and have moved my mailbox to
the new system using the Active Directory, Exchange Task, Move mailbox. It
updated my outlook profile and again, so far so good.

But, I now notice that any e-mail with an attachment takes a very long
time to display. The attachment could be 2MB and I am waiting for the e-mail
for about 30 seconds. Then, another delay when I try and open the
attachment. Why am I getting this kind of performance on the new server
(which has more memory, disk space, better processor, only running exchange)
when the old server was running quickly and had to handle multiple duties
including SQL at one point? I need to figure this out before I can move any
of my other users. Any help is greatly appreciated. Some other notes:

The server is on a network running at 10MB and both servers are in the same
location. Everything else appears to run just as quickly as before. And
again, the old server is also the domain controller while the new one is
simply a member of the domain.

Oh, and we haven't even added virus protection on new server yet (still
testing) so there is no slowdown on scanning attachments. The old server is
running antivirus (symantec) and not having any problems.

Help! What have I done wrong or what am I missing?

Thanks,
Ken Wigle
