Using Exchange 2003 across two AD Sites

I am planning to set up two new sites running Windows Server 2003 Standard
edition and Exchange 2003 Server Standard edition. These two sites will be
connected via a managed VPN solution. The overall intention of this install
is to keep the data on the sites separate, whilst sharing the same Exchange
system, therefore helping balance the load over the VPN tunnels.
I am considering either using a two trusted domain or a child and parent
solution, but I'm not sure which will give me the best and easiest solution
to install and support.
Can anyone suggest the best way of doing this without purchasing enterprise
software?
