Re: How many?

Never really tried that. It wouldn't be as usable as you might think
because the client would likely get confused with what identity it was
using. Additionally, OL has known issues if you configure SMTP service (as
in IMAP or POP clients) and MAPI clients.

I believe the theoretical limit was 255 based on how many additional
mailboxe values could be stored, but I have not checked on that bit of
trivia in years. I highly suggest that you check out an Outlook newsgroup if
this is something you really need to know. You could also lab it out and
find out exactly how many you can have. The test would be something like:
create as many mailboxes as you think it can handle (say 1000) on an
Exchange server. Grant your account the privileges needed to open and send
mail for the entire ORG. Configure Outlook to open your primary using MAPI
(we'll discount mixing protocols, including soup can protocols because we
know the sending protocol will break if mixed with MAPI in the same
profile), and open as many of of the others as you can. Report the numbers.

IIRC, MAPI itself had a few limitations. That was why the OWA 5.5 server
was limited in terms of concurrency. Well, a big reason anyway. ;)

Any clues as to what you're trying to do? Maybe we can offer a suggestion?

That said, I know that tools like exmerge will open all of the mailboxes on
your server if you tell it to. But it'll do it in batches (of one IIRC) so
that's not the same thing.

I have never asked that question with the other "normal protocols it uses"
such as IMAP or POP. Again though, the limitation is going to likely be in
the variable that holds the configuration data.

Let us know if you find such an answer. I suspect it'll be on the Outlook
newsgroups though.
