An FE in a DMZ is not a recommended configuration, albeit a supported
one.
As you have found out, unlike 5.5 you need a full install of Exchange
2000/2003 in order to run OWA.
Far better from what you describe would be an ISA in a DMZ publishing
to an FE within the network
.
