Most of the systems that I've built for clients are about 8-12 hours of
work, start-to-finish, and usually includes:
Racking hardware
Ensuring network connectivity
Configuring hardware / disk arrays
Installing OS and system management tools
Updating with service packs / patches
Forestprep/domainprep
Installing Exchange and service packs / patches
Configuring Storage Groups / mail stores (if EE)
Configuring SMTP connector(s)
Configuring IIS for OWA password change
Installing and updating antivirus / antispam software
Installing necessary backup agents and testing
Creating mailboxes
Testing mail send/receive internally and externally through mail clients and
OWA
Boilerplate documentation with client's variables plugged in
Installing management tools on administrator's workstation
Client training on how to add/remove/disable mailboxes
Every now and then you run into problems which can drag it out for a day or
two, but I've never had a simple installation last more than 3 days. If
it's a migration, it really depends on the complexity of the environment,
how many systems are interconnected, if the consultant is going to be
responsible for mail client deployment, etc. Additionally, security,
advanced firewall configuration in perimiter/dmz environments or other
services that they are providing may increase the deployment timeline. I
would be sure to ask for a detailed SOW.
