You do not need to touch the AD, in fact you have it in a good shape.
Go to the Recipient Policies in ESM and you will see where it says
..local. Simply edit that to say .com or create another one in there
that says .com and set that to be primary, either is good (in your
case)
Now go to AD Domains and trusts and get the properties. Not the forest
but the AD Domains and trusts object above it. You will see the UPN
there. Change that to .com
Now use ADMODIFY (google and download for free) and mass set/change
everyone's UPN to the .com one
Users will now be able to use OWA and enter their UPN, which is
probably the same as their smtp email address, to log on.
