Unusual Exch 2003 error

I am bringing an Exchange 2003 server to a 5.5 organization.
When I am running setup I get an error after I specify the admin group name:
mydomain
and hit Next I get this:
setup cannot continue because one or more of the following
conditions was deteced:
could not bind to the microsoft exchange directory server exchange1.
the microsoft exchange server computer does not respond.
please refer to your exchange 2003 deployment tools documentation on your cd
for information about correcting this problem.
Exchange1 was an old 5.5 server that I removed from my organization about a
1yr ago. That server was removed and deleted. My current exchange 5.5
server is named Exchange2.
How can I get resolve this?
