Hello -

We're about to migrate from NT4 / Exchange 5.5 win Win 2003/Exchange 2003.
We'll create a new Exchange 2003 organisation, using ADMT and ADC to handle
the account and mailbox moves.

Given that the Exchange migration will span several days, both old and new
servers will host active mailboxes along the way. In that case, what's the
best way to maintain incoming email to users on both servers? Presumably,
the 5.5 servers will continue to accept incoming mail , because that setup
remains intact during migration. Does the ADC know about mailboxes that have
been migrated and send the mail across (I didn't have that impression)? I
ask so because if we configure the gateway to send incoming mail to both
servers, surely the 2003 servers will generate NDRs for mailboxes they don't
yet host? This begs the question of address ownership - my understanding is
that Exchange 2003 doesn't have a user's SMTP addresses until they've been
migrated - is that right?

Does the ADC does not maintain mailflow between the servers? Also, is it the
case that, as far as Exchange 2003 is concerned, it does not impose SMTP
addresses on mailboxes that correspond to the domain name of the AD - which
will be different from the email domain name?

I'd be grateful for any relevant advice.

Many thanks.

Loftus.
