I fixed it.

Having followed instructions on how one has to create a second IIS virtual
directory (e.g. "ExchDAV") I did this on the front-end server and made the
reg. change on that server. By trawling through the IIS logs I found how
the FE server was trying to connect to the ExchDAV folder on on the BE
server. So I created that Virtual Directory on the Back End server and it
all worked.
