Hi Gareth,
We had a problem running ForestPrep too
(although the registry key you specify had the
correct value and diagnostics run with no errors)
and we finally came across the solution.
The problem was caused by a recommendation
in the WS2K3 Security Guide in conjuction
with a 'feature' of a component used by 'ForestPrep'.
The WS2K3 Security Guide recommends
disabling the "8.3 Name Generation", which
we have applied earlier in the NT4->AD
migration process.
Unfotunately, ldifde.exe uses the %TEMP%
environment variable in a way that requires
8.3 names (which have been disabled) and
in effect cause 'ForestPrep' to fail.
However the error message given was completely
irrelevant:
"
The component "Microsoft Exchange Forest Preparation"
cannot be assigned the action ForestPrep because:
- Either you do not have permission to update the Active
Directory schema or Active Directory service is currently too busy.
"
The solution was found in:
http://blogs.msdn.com/exchange/archive/2004/02/11/71405.aspx
Hope this helps,
