Can't join 5.5 site with 2k3

I am in the process of upgrading from ex 5.5 to ex 2003.
I have recently upgraded from a single NT 4.0 domain to
Active Directory running is 2000 mixed mode.
I have followed the procedures in the Exchange Server
2003 Deployment Guide by running forestperp, domainprep
and installed and tested ADC. During the /forestprep
process I did get an error that said I had invalid
characters in my org name. I found Q289671 and resolved
the underlying issue. DCDiag and NetDiag run with no
errors.
During the install process I am not getting the option
to "join or upgrade an existing Exchange 5.5
Organization". Q829360 says this behavior is by design.
So I proceeded with the install. The install appeared to
complete with no error. When I run the migration wizard
it crashes with no errors after I select the type
migration during the migration destination.
I have uninstalled Exchange 2003 and walked through the
deployment guide to ensure that I have not missed
anything.
If anyone can help I would be very grateful.
