MTA won't start after adding NIC

I've got an Exchange 5.5 sp4 server on an NT4 sp6a box.

I need to multihome this server but whenever I add the
second NIC the MTA won't start. Note: the second NIC is
bound to TCP/IP but the WINS client is disabled. I've
confirmed that the first NIC is bound first in all the
services. Simply removing the second NIC gets the MTA
going again.

Any ideas truly appreciated,
