Management has said they now want to archive ALL incoming and outgoing
messages and they want to limit some to just the use of internal mail which
is required by software running to accomplish daily business tasks. There
are appx 20 users of internet email on our system. My question is, As a
newbie to MS Exchange what problems should I look out for when trying to use
MS Exchange 2003 as an internal mail server along with regular internet pop3
access for some users.(Maybe pop3 access is not the way to go for internet
mail after reading some previous posts...would OWA work better for those
using internet mail for those who use Outlook )? Also when archiving mail
can exmerge be used or does one have to archive each mailbox individually.
Since needing to stay below the 16gb limit of MS Exchange Standard is a must
will the archive or exmerge function accomplish what I am trying to do and
what type of file will be created (PST or ?) I assume this would create PST
files that can be searched or looked at later through Outlook, and storeage
of these PST files is not part of the MS Exchange 16GB limit, just limited
by hard drive space on the system. The resulting PST files would need to be
backed up to and external source for preserving RIGHT?.

I am not clear on exactly what files are created containg the mailbox
database info for all users and should these files be backed up themselves
to preserve integrity of system in case of server crash.

Another area of concern is defrag. Will this also help in keeping database
file size managed and exactly when should a defrag and how often should it
be run.

Finally what utility programs do those who are already using MS Exchange
consider valuable in managing their Exchange enviorment.

Thanks in advance for any help
