Windows and Exchange each have native modes. The difference is a little
confusing.
For Active Directory, there are four domain functional levels (W2K
mixed, W2K native, W2K3 interim, and W2K3, which I guess you could call
"W2K3 native"). There are also two separate forest functional levels.
The basic upshot of these differences is that, in mixed mode, you can
intermix Windows NT 4 DCs and AD DCs, and in native mode you can't. For
more on the subtle details, see

In Exchange mixed mode, you can have Exchange 5.5 servers in the
organization. In Exchange native mode, you can't. See KB article 829577
for a fuller explanation of what this means, plus a list of the features
you get when you switch to native mode.
