I'm a Network Admin for a Small Business Server 2000 domain of about 20 XP
workstations. Last week I generated too many audits of the Security Event
Logs which resulted in all server related activity slowing tremendously.
Emails sat in users' Outbox folder for up to an hour before being sent and it
took about this long for users to receive external emails.

When I found out about this, the Bad Mail folder was full and the SMTP
virtual server was corrupted. After I created a new Bad Mail folder and SMTP
virtual server, the network returned to normal. However, the overall network
disk usage had increased approx. 10 GB above it's prior level. This level
exceeds the amount of disk space we have on backup tapes so I used the
eseutil \d switch to defragment our priv1.edb database. This action reduced
the disk usage, but it is still higher than I'd like it to be.

When I examined the source of the disk usage increase, I located cause to be
the Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes directory and the Information Store
directories. After defragmenting the priv1.edb database, the Information
Store reduced from 9.0 GB to 6.07 GB, but this is still higher than the
initial 3.9 GB. And the Mailboxes directory was unchanged by this
defragmenting, 5.5 GB compared to its previous 3.6 GB.

What else can I do to lower the network disk usage? I searched the Exchange
KB for information on other eseutil commands, but I want to use only those
commands which will resolve this problem with minimal risk. Would any of the
other eseutil command switches, like repair or integrity lower the disk
usage? Are there any other actions I could take?

Thanks.
