So I just found out it's a big Raid 6 set. Our internal Netapp guy said
it's just 1 big pool of 55 disks in Raid 6. I loaded up the Exchange
calculator and put that we have 3000 users in Online mode with an extra 2500
IOPs on the server. Without the extra 2500 IOPS and Raid 10 I see we would
only need 22 or so disks. With the extra 2500 IOPs and Raid 6 it jumps up
to over 200 disks with our 10,000RPM Fiber Channel Disks. Now this is for
the Exchange 2007 calculator and Exchange 2003 uses even more IOPs.
It's odd that it says we need this many disks yet Netapp shows a 30%
utilization even with SQL utilizing the same disks. That has me scratching
my head in confusion.
Whilst I can't say with an abolute degree of certainty I will say that
it is not /usual/ for a 3000 user Exchange environment to be
manufactured from a single aggregate. There would be one for logs and
one for stores and another one or two for the SQL you have and another
for any CIF shares or whatever else you might have on it.
Please just ignore the MS Exchange calculator spreadsheet; it's not
appropriate for the issue at hand here.
I would engage either NetApp professional services or the partner that
put your system in for some support. Initial indications are that you
need to stop looking at Exchange right now and focus on exactly what
your storage layout is. Like I say, it sounds wrong but only because
of what little you have said here. If you want to email me offline
with the serial numbers of the Filer(s) I will point you at some
questions to ask the partner but you do need to stop the questions
here and get the partner involved.
