need assistance with setting up multiple smtp connectors

i am trying to set up a configuration where i have two smtp connectors. the
default connector with address space "*" is set up to use DNS to deliver
mail directly. the second connector has specific domains in the address
space and is configured to use a smart host for mail delivery. for the most
part this seems to be working as expected but randomly messages won't get
delivered and the user will get an NDR stateing that a configuration error
has cause the message to bounce between two servers causing a loop. we get
these messages for domains defined in the second connectors address space
and domains that are not defined.
any ideas or recommendations to set this up correctly would be greatly
appreciated.
