Sounds like a VPN issue. When you are having the issue can you confirm connectivity to the server? From the NDR it cannot make a connection which tells me it could be VPN related. You need to confirm or at least perform some monitoring on the VPN to elminate it. Also check the Event Log on the Exchange server to see if anything is relevant at the times the connectivity is lost.

To the best that I can tell its not the VPN other than it maybe busy and slow at times, but otherwise has been very reliable.

"Randy Wells" <rwells@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:eABuLylFIHA.2268@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxOK - Exchange 5.5 don't laugh. anyway...
I have two sites, the HQ and the remote office, The HQ and the remote
office are connected by VPN and currently all incoming email is routed
to the exchange server at HQ, then messages for users at the remote
office are passed to the EX server at the remote office.
Outgoing email is the problem when sent from the remote office. It is an intermittent problem but here is what happens. A user at the remote site writes and email and sends it to one person outside the company and on person at HQ. The email gets delivered to the person outside the company but bounces because of the person at HQ. I'm assuming that the email to the outside person is being delivered using the T1 connected to the remote office, whereas the email to the internal person at HQ, the email is routed through the VPN. I believe this to be a time-out issue. Agreed? What setting can I change to either lengthen those timeouts or reroute the mail?
Thanks,
Randy
