What kind of credentials should I be asking for (basic authentication)?

The third party is most likely going to need you to Authenticate to them.
before they will allow you to relay off their servers, you will need to call
them to confirm. If so, go under the Delivery Tab of your SMTP VS go to
Outbound Security to input the proper credentials. Smarthosting off your
ISP or third party vendor is not uncommon, in fact, its almost getting to be
a requirement.

I'm having trouble sending, not receiving e-mail.
No. what happened was I called the people that we were having trouble
with
(the people that are sending the NDRs) and they told me that the IP
address
we were using was directed to our domain, but our domain name was being
directed to our third party domain name (a rDNS problem). When I told our
third party vendor about it, they said set up smart hosting and that was
it.
I had to figure this out on my own (I don't remember this being covered in
the Exchange Server course I took).

SMTP VS does not download email per se, POP3 Downloads. Did the third
party give you instructions on how to setup your mail server for
Smarthosting to them using Exchange Server?

I have a problem sending e-mail to someone (timeout NDR is returned to
me).
We have Exchange Server 2003 that uses SMTP virtual server to download
e-mail from the third party. Our domain for the sake of argument is
Domain1.xxx and the third party domain is Domain2.yyy with an IP
address
of
111.222.333.444.
I have entered [111.222.333.444] into the Smart Host box of the SMTP
Virtual
Server, but it isn't working yet. Should I wait for more time to go by
or
is
there another setting I have to make?
