You're on the right track - implement TLS on Connector configuration - don't need to do anything to SMTP virtual servers.

I'm running Exchange 2003 with a single SMTP Virtual Server (Default SMTP
Virtual Server). Within my system I have a number of connectors under the
Routing Groups folder that take care of delivering the email. All of the
Connectors use the Default SMTP V S. One connector is to send email out to
the Internet through our email filtering service and the other two are for
"direct" connects to partners' Exchange servers where we have a secure link.
We are considering using the email archiving feature of our email filtering
service. Currently no email with private info should be sent to anyone
outside of our company or its two partners. So, we've never had need to
secure email to the Internet and the connection to the filtering service is
using just SMTP. However, if we start using the archiving service journaling
from the Exchange server will be sending some emails with private info in
them to our service for storage. They suppport a TLS to TLS connection. My
thought was that I just need to create a second SMTP Virtual Server and run
SMTP through one for the partner connections and SMTP w/ TLS on the other one
for email headed to the Internet through our filtering service.
Does this sound like a reasonable plan? Also would you suggest that the
Default V S be kept with SMTP only or have this one converted to TLS?
