Hi and thanks again:
Actually, I'm not using authentication at the server that acts
as smart host at our hosting company (run by us). As a test, I let all
clients that come from my other IP (Exchange) relay to other domains.
As stated by users from the "doomed" domain, they don't receive an
NDR.
The ping -a to the external IP of Exchange returns:
117.Red-213-98-144.staticIP.rima-tde.net [213.98.144.117].
Well, at last, the IP at the hosting company, with the SMTP
server that acts as smart host is: 62.81.199.87. And Exchange lives at
213.98.144.117.
Thanks for your interest.
Best regards,
Javi.

Hi, thanks for your reply:
Yes, I have an SMTP connector, and I guess it authenticates
properly, since outgoing mail works for most domains.
You can check out the authentication settings in the advanced tab...and
confirm them with the ISP/whomever runs that server.
However, I have
learnt we can't receive mail from those domains either.
Do *they* get an NDR?
I have set up another connector only to gmail.com in order to
test without disturbing normal SMTP flow, without a smarthost, using
the Default SMTP Server. The NDRs I get look like this:
Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified. Please
retry or
contact your administrator.
<mail.mydomain.com #4.4.7>.
While they are in the queue, the status is: "The connection was
dropped by the remote host".
I have a static IP address for ISP B, and I get the result from
ping -a.
What result?
I'm sorry to mask both IP and domain name, but it looks
scarey stuff to me.
You do give your e-mail address out to people, I presume ....this is no
different. I'm not asking for your admin credentials or your social security
number. It just makes it much more difficult to troubleshoot when we don't
have all the info.
How can I get rid of the smarthost and get to send mail directly
from Exchange? I would like to see the whole conversation between my
Exchange and gmail.com, and see why the latter rejects the connection,
but all I can see is eventid 4006, raised by MsExchange Transport at
the event viewer:
"Message delivery to the host '64.233.183.27 failed while delivering
to the
remote domain 'gmail.com' for the following reason: The connection
was dropped by the remote host".
TIA and best regards,
Javi.
P.D.: You were right about ISP and hosting company. So, that should
read hosting company A and ISP B.
No biggie - just helps keep things clear.
