I have auth setup using my a Dedicated SMTP virtual off of one of my
exchange servers that acts as a bridge head. and it works just fine. But
that is in My environment. there can be many reasons to setup the auth on a
relay.
Now best practices for sending outbound e-mail differe sometimes between who
you talk with. Some prefer inbound and outbound mail to be sent through some
sort of mail proxy that scans for spam before entering and before leaving
your system.
I always prefer inbound be scanned prior to coming in but not as concerned
about outbound because of some of the checks and balances I run other places
to keep spam from going out.

We have 2 site with 2 exchange 2003 SP2 servers, one at each site. The
site are connected over a WAN and each server has his own routing group.
For internet mails we want to use the relay server of our provider, which
only support auth smtp.
The company, which had installed the Exchange servers, said configuring
auth smtp makes problems with the communication between the exchange
servers. They installed a SMTP relay on a third server, which send the
mails with auth smtp to the provider. So the mails were send from the
Internet Mail Connector of the exchange server without auth to the relay,
from this with auth smtp to the provider
I was a little surprised about this. How I read, only configuring an
authentification to the virtual smpt server should be never done. On the
other side configuring an authentification to the IMC should run without
problems.
Are there problems with auth smtp or is that complete bull shit, what our
support company said?
Thanks
Markus Pfeffer
