If you are not already using one I would suggest creating a SMTP connector
to your ISP.

The problem may be an authentication issue, but some investigation can be
done to be certain.

You can increase logging to get additional information. Increase logging on
MSExchangeTransport to max, as well as enable SMTP protocol logging (select
NCSA) on the SMTP Virtual Server. Diagnostic logging will log related
events in the application log, and NCSA logging is done to a file on the
hard drive.

What is the NDR text?

You can also try to use Outlook Express (preferably from the Exchange
server) to connect to your ISP (using the credentials you have) and send
test mail out. If it successfully sends the mail to your destination
external mailbox then very likely you were able to authenticate
successfully.

Finally, Network Monitor tool can be helpful in getting what is being sent
to and from your ISP.

| I recently posted this on the administration board but I think it will be
better here:
|
| Recently my ISP (Rogers High Speed) has changed its mail configurations,
and it was at this time that my Exchange Server decided to stop sending
mail.
|
| I am running windows 2000 server, with exchange 2000. Since all of my
mail is being sent out through my ISP I have my Smart Host set up to send
through their SMTP server. I have authentication set up using my Rogers
account. Everything was working fine until they changed their settings.
|
| I have tried clearing my DNS cash, Adding connectors, changing every SMTP
setting, plus numerous other fixes I have found on the web.
|
| I have all SP installed, and all windows Updates installed.
|
| I am able to send mail through outlook if I set up a pop account local on
a workstation. I have also done a nslookup on various mailservers I am
trying to connect to and they all seem to work fine.
|
| Whenever I check the Event Viewer I get the following message. DCOM was
unable to communicate with the computer ****** using any of the configured
protocols.
|
| When tracking mail I get:
|
| SMTP: Started Outbound Transfer of Message
| Message transfered to ***** through SMTP
| SMTP: Started Outbound Transfer of Message
| Message transfered to ***** through SMTP
| SMTP: Non-Delivered Report (NDR) Generated
|
| I am out of options and I have tried everything.
|
| I have all credentials set up in the Default SMTP Virtual Server:
| This is where the smart host is set up, along with the user info needed
to send through SMTP
| I can resolve names using nslookup
| I can telnet the server from my exchange machine here is what happens:
|
| telnet smtp.broadband.rogers.com 25
| 220 smtp102.rog.mail.re2.yahoo.com ESMTP
| HELO fileserv
| 250 smtp102.rog.mail.re2.yahoo.com
| MAIL FROM: somename@rogers.com
| 530 authentication required - for help go to
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/
| pop/pop-11.html
|
| not sure how to authenticate through telnet.. could there be a problem
here?
|
| Could someone shed some light on this....
| Thanks,
| Eric
