OK, so it truly sounds like an RPC failure in the underlying network.
To verify, see if you can open the event viewer of one server from the other
(and vice versa). There could also be a problem creating a secure connection
between the two servers.
Also, you could check to be sure that each server has the right RPC endpoint
mappers (Exchange wise) with this article:
