Re: upgrading to outlook 2003 issues

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

RPC over HTTPS encapsulates the RPC packets that Outlook uses to talk to Exchange in HTTPS. Basically this allows you to use Outlook over a WAN connection without having to set up a VPN connection or publish the necessary ports for RPC itself (either directly [bad idea] or via an ISA firewall).

If you were told to go into the Mail applet in Control Panel and check off "Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP" under the Connection tab and then click the "Exchange Proxy Settings..." button to enter a URL, etc. you're using RPC over HTTPS.

These are the system requirements: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998943.aspx
You cannot use Windows 2000 at all. There are no patches or upgrades that can be performed to allow Windows 2000 to work.

As far as I know they are running exchange 2003. I am not a part of the server side, just setting them on the client side. I will also apoligize that I do not understand what you mean by RPC over HTTPS. I understand what the acronims mean but I do not know enough about the server side to tell you if that is in fact what I am trying to do. I was given settings to use and those are what I use and have used when setting up these on WinXP Pro machines with no problem.

So you are saying the problem is Win2000? I assumed since they were both NT technology based (win 2000 and Win XP Pro) it could be done. If not are there any patches or upgrade other than an OS upgrade that would allow this to happen?

Thanks for your response!

Matt

Are you trying to use RPC over HTTPS? Doesn't work with Windows 2000.
What Exchange version is this?

I upgraded a Windows 2000 pro machine from Office XP to Office 2003. I did this so I could put this client on the exchange server and use basic authentication and put in a proxy server as well as use fast connection options that Outlook 2003 has for exchange connections. My problem is that those options under security tab are not there. I uninstalled Office 2003 after that and reinstalled a fresh copy making sure there were no lingering office folders in the program files before I reinstalled. I did not go through the registry to make sure there were no office references though. I assume that is my next step, uninstall and then manually go through the registry and delete instances of office 2003, then reinstall but how time consuming is that. Is there an update or any other means to get the options I need to connect to my exchange server using the basic auth with fast connection options and entering a proxy server?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Sincerely,

Matt
