Hi Robert,
1. I am connecting Exchange via RPC over HTTP
2. All users have same problem
3. We do not have ISA
On lan everything is working fine because i am connecting to Backend
Exchange Server, but when i try to connect to front end server over internet
i get the message "Trying to Connect". I have configured the outlook client
and Exchange server as detailed in the docs and i can very well open the URL
https://webmail.domain.com/rpc and
https://webmail.domain.com/rpc/rpcproxy.dll without any certificate error.
When i run outlook with /rpcdiag to understand the behaviour, it says
connecting to MAIL, Directory and Referral.
Thanks
Ashish

Hi Ashish,
Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.
From your description, I know that when you try to configure MAPI profile,
you get the error "The connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server is
unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."
If I am off-base, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Please let me know the following to make the situation more clearly:
1. Do you configure Outlook to connect Exchange via RPC over http or LAN?
2. Do all the users or some of them have this problem?
3. Do you have ISA installed in the network?
If you configure Outlook to connect to Exchange server via LAN, please do
the following:
Step 1: If Outlook connect Exchange server via LAN, you must input the
name
of backend Exchange server. Please have a check.
Step 2: Ping the Exchange server, can you do this successfully?
Step 3: Run ipconfig /all under command prompt, check if the network
configuration is correct.
Step 4: Modify the registry keys to let Outlook 2003 use NETBIOS name only
to see if it helps.
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system.
Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using
Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
1. Click "Start", and then click "Run".
2. In the "Open" box, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and
then click "OK".
3. Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\RPC
4. On the "Edit" menu, point to "New", and then click "DWORD Value".
5. Type "FQDNFailover" (without the quotation marks) as the value name,
and
then press ENTER.
6. On the "Edit" menu, click "Modify".
7. In the "Value data" box, type one of the following values, depending on
how you want Outlook 2003 to resolve server names:
- Type "2" (without the quotation marks) to use NetBIOS name only.
8. Click "OK", and then quit Registry Editor.
For more information, please refer to the following article:
831609 How to Change the Method That Outlook 2003 Uses to Resolve Server
Names

If you configure Outlook RPC over http, please take the following
troubleshooting steps according to the following article:
How to troubleshoot client RPC over HTTP connection issues in Outlook 2003

If the problem still exists, please help me collect the following
information for further research.
MPS Report on the problematic computer
1. Download the MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE from the following link and then run
this tool to gather some information from the problematic
computer:http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a57
9-30b0bd915706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE
2. Double-click on the MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE file.
[Note] This process may take some time; however, it will not have a
negative effect on the performance.
3. A CAB file will be generated in the
%systemroot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab directory called
%COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports.CAB. The CAB file will contain the reports
generated by the MPS Reporting Tool.
4. Please send the v-robeli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject: 37894516-MAPI
profile configuration error.
I am looking forward to hear from you.
If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
