I have 2 clients exhibiting similar issues, both starting approximately the
same time, one on Exchange 2000 and the other on SBS 2003.
On Exchange 2000, several users (not all) were unable to log onto OWA,
receiving page cannot be displayed messages. In IIS, attempting to browse
the user folder failed. On the SBS 2003 server, emails began to
disappear.
Here is what I found:
On Exchange 2000 server, users who had a default email address other than
the default address handed down by recepient policies were unable to login
to
the OWA account. There are 2 ways to get around the problem temporarily,
the
first being changing the default smtp address to the original. This posed
a
problem to the users who needed a secondary email address as their
default.
The second fix is to log onto OWA using the unc
http://exchangeserver/exchange/emailaddress instead of the aliase.
On the SBS2003, the default smtp address was changed back to the original
as
handed down by the recepient policy and then users were able to see the
contects of emails sent to the secondary address.
The Exchange 2000 and the SBS2003 are on different sides of the city,
different ISPs, differnet IP scheme, different domains. The only common
factor is the fact that one of the users from SBS2003 logs onto the
Exchange
2000 OWA to check his email.
I am aware that this sounds rediculous, but I had 2 other techs check and
confirm the same.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This is correct, and it does seem strange, but you can only access the
default OWA directory if you have an email address in the Primary SMTP
Domain that is defined in your Default Recipient Policy. For those users
that are unable to use OWA because they don't have an address in this
Primary SMTP Domain, you will need to add such an email address to their AD
account. It doesn't have to be their default address, but it does have to
be in the list.
Or, you can create an extra Exchange Virtual Directory in Exchange System
Manager, to cover the additional SMTP domain that these users use. They
will then use that OWA directory, instead of the standard
http://server/Exchange one.
