No I do not have SSL required on the BE. No I don't see any entries
in
the BE logs.

Does it make any difference if you remove the requirement for SSL, or
turn off FBA? In a test enviromment, it is possible to use FBA
without SSL - just search for AllowRetailHTTPAuth to find details of
the reg. keys.

If the requests aren't hitting the BE, then something is broken at the
FE.
