- An @ in the name works.
- An @ in the alias does not. When you try to set a mail contact's alias to contain the @ character, here's what you get:
[Set-MailContact : Cannot bind parameter 'Alias' to the target.
Exception setting "Alias": ""foo@bay" is not valid for Alias.
Valid values are: Strings formed with characters from a to z (uppercase or lowercase), digits from 0 to 9, !, #, $, %, &, ', *, +, -, /, =, ?, ^, _, `, {, |, } or ~.
One or more periods may be embedded in an alias, but each one of them should be preceded and followed by at least one of the other characters. Unicode characters from U+00A1 to U+00FF are also valid in an alias, but they will be mapped to a best-fit US-ASCII string in the email address which is genera
ted from such an alias."
- When creating a new contact with @ in the contact name, the @ gets converted to a ? in the alias.

We're moving our office to Exchange 2007 from our current Exchange 2003
world. We import / sync Contacts with external agencies weekly and dump the
information into our Exchange server. Most all the Contacts have aliases
configured as the smtp address, including the "@" character. If we examine
any of these Contacts in the Exchange 2007 Management Console, we get a
warning about the "@" character. What actual impact will this cause us if we
don't do anything? Will the Contacts still be usable?
