Paul, adding a second DC is rarely a problem. Just add the DC, and let stuff replicate to it, then demote the old DC.

dear martin and oliver you are both very experienced guys and from your replies one can note. i am only a junior admin so please bear with me :)
i will go through your replies and evaluate them and see how i could plan the migration. my only fear is that since the old server is very buggy and full of problems will stop during the process and everything gets corrupted!!!

"Paul Smith" <teknologix007@xxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:%23AzuTkIVJHA.5588@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxi see...
but will this be invisible to the users or do i have to put the server to downtime?? cos i cannot afford to. also is the method you suggested subject to failures?
"Martin Blackstone [MVP]" <martinb@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:ej5pNdIVJHA.1188@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxThe point being Paul, that unless you have some specific reason, there is no need to create a new AD domain. You are creating a lot of work for you, and a lot of pain for your users.
You could just add the new server to the existing domain, DCPromo it, transfer the FMSO roles to it and demote the old DC.
There are a couple of really nice articles on this:

"Paul Smith" <teknologix007@xxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:%23SFas4HVJHA.2928@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxthere is the need cos the present server is old and full of problems and purchasing a new server is not a problem cos its needed for performance and reliability

You realise you don't have to do that right? Unless there's an underlying need for this?
Oliver
Yes since I will be moving to a new physical server I want to create a new domain as well with new usernames etc but will be using same data so I will need to connect both servers together to transfer data
