Re: add stores to RSG

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Thanks for the answer. I'm much clear now. I was planning a server with
lots of disk space for recovery using RSG so we don't have to consider extra
disk space on other servers. Also thinking in case we need to work on more
than one store, maybe from different SG. Understanding the restriction I'll
add another server in the plan.

Thanks again.

At the time or restoration of multiple information stores belonging to
different storage groups the transaction log suffixes are different and
whenever your restore an information store from backup the log prefix
changes which causes a problem during the reply of transaction logs. Let us
assume you are allowed to add information stores from different storage
groups and then you start restoring. Your backup/restore software will
compete the restoration absolutely fine but non of the backup softwares
available in market has an option to specify the temp directory location
separately for each storage group being restored. In such scenario when you
start recovering the information stores by replying transaction logs the
eseutil /cc will try to replay all the transaction logs available in the
temp directory which results in failure of recovery process and this is
because of the mismatch in log suffixes.
I hope that answers your question.

However, if you still want to play with multiple stores at the same time
you can use another RSG on another server.

That's what I found. For example, the first store can be any from the
same
AG but once a store from SG A was added then you are restricted to SG A
for
any addtional stores you want to add. If I want to work on another store
I
have to use another RSG. Just wondering why you can't add 2nd store like
the
first one, e.g. any store from the same AG.

Exchange 2003 does not allow adding databases belonging to other storage
groups in fact. If you have added a database to recover from storage
group A
and then trying to add from storage group B the recovery storage group
does
not permit adding it.

In a MS article it says I can add more than one stores. To test I
created
a
RSG on one of the Exchange server. When trying to add stores I got a
list
of
stores from all Exchange servers. Once added one then trying to add
more
it
only lists the stores on the current server. It doesn't list stores
from
other servers. Is this correct? If so, more than one stores really
just
for
those on the same server, right?

thanks.
