This test applies to sending through a smart host. I thought that was
pretty clear by telling you to telnet to the smart host.

Check with your ISP and see if they have made some change, like
prohibiting
you from relaying. You might try opening a command window on the
Exchange
server and entering:

Telnet smart-host-IP-address 25
helo yourservername.company.com
mail from:y...@xxxxxxxxxxx
rctp to:y...@xxxxxxxxxxx
data
This is a test.
.
quit

See if you get any error codes during the transmission.

Hello

Can somebody help with the following:

I get the following message when trying to send mail.

"A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to
bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients.
Contact your administrator.

<mail.btinternet.com #5.3.5>"

From my Exchange Servers queues, I get the following message: (When
highlighting the smart host mail connector in the queue window)

"Unable to deliver the message because the destination address was
misconfigured as a mail loop."

or " The server is configured to loop back on itself"

I use SBS 2003 and Exchange.

Connector configured as smart host. I use my ISP as SMTP host- I have
a dynamic IP

PS: if I use DNS I can send mail. Howevr, "because" my IP is
dynamic, some servers reject the mail as spam.

My mail server has worked without problems for several years with this
configuration, when this error suddenly appeared.

The only hint I have is that I have been abroad for some weeks and
during that time I have logged on to my server/computer through a VPN
connection, using Remote Access and Exchange Web without problems.

The last couple of days I have searched many sites for a solution,
among others Microsoft knowledge base KB326304 Q316617 and
tried their solutions without success

From reading various sites/forum, I think the problem is linked to a
conflict with the connector. I'm not experienced in DNS and do not
like to tinker with LDAP or other tables without knowing exactly what
I'm doing! Thus I'm stuck at the moment!

Hi Ed
Thanks for your reply.
I have tried what you propose, but as I'm not "using" DNS for outbound
or inbound mail, I can't get any meaningful result from this.

I have spoken to the ISP -they say there are no problems and that my
mails doesn't bounce off their servers

If I configure a client computer to bypass Exchange- I use Outlook
2003- all outbound mail from this client goes out without problems

Ed
You may have misunderstood my previous reply about "getting any
meaningful results .." I didn't intend to query your expertise.
Apologies!
I've tried to Telnet as you suggested, I can connect, but when I try
to send mail the server wants authentication, and then I'm immediately
disconnected.

Ed
When I connect I get code 220
After I "Helo" I get code 250
However, after I have sat up authentication, the command program
crashes when I enter the "mail from:" command
