Online maintenance not completing is an issue, but not typically one
that
should prevent truncation of the log files after a backup. In fact the
backup API will cause the online maintenance task to cease before
completion, not the other way around.
If your online maintenance isn't completing, then you need to expand the
period of time that it is scheduled to run, perhaps on a weekend. It
should
also be scheduled to not overlap with your backup activity.
Those event logs are not the ones indicating the successful completion
of
the backup, however. Do you see successful backup completion messages in
the logs from MS Exchange IS?

Thanks Rich (Rich is a nice name... you must be Rich then :)
Yes I did the Normal (full) backup for all the storage group.
I've checked the application and i can see the Warning (yellow) there.
"there is an online maintenance overlap for database - First Storage
Group\Mailbox Databse." Please revise the online maintenance
schedule."
how do i run the eseutil?
I tried running it at the cmd
c:\eseutil /mk e:\exhchange\First Storage Group\E00.chk - but it
didn't
work.
Note : What I've noticed is that transactional logs for other Storage
Groups
are reduced except First Storage Group.

Hi again
I did the Full online backup of my exchange server (running on
windows
2003
64-bit). Then I restarted the sever. Now I still see the
transactional
log
which is now 58 GB. It was supposed to be deleted. May I ask why?
Assuming you did the Exchange-aware "normal" (full) backup of your
storage group(s), the unneeded log files would have been removed at
the successful completion of the backup. Did you check the
Application
Log to see if there were any errors (missing log files, for example)?
It's also possible that the *.chk file is damaged. You can use
eseutil
with the /mk switch to see what log files are thought to be necessary
and then validate that information agains the log files currently in
your log directopry. It may be that the *.chk file thinks you need a
log file that no longer exists.
What was the purpose of restarting the server? Did you stop any
services before you made that backup???

Andy mentioned a very imp point " It should also be scheduled to not
overlap with your backup activity. " - if you have online maintenance
clash with backup - this does cause major problems - since the
database would be exposed to two similar activities at the same time -
which by the way isn't good.
The database wouldnt be exposed to two similar activities at the same
time. As Andy stated, the online maint is considered a low-priority
task and wouldnt run while the backup is running.
Secondly, what we could quickly check.
Using Eseutil you can find out which log file is missing or corrupted
in your entire sequence of 58 GB. An example is given below.
Eseutil /ml "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchsrvr\Mailbox\First Storage
Group\E00" >C:\FSG.txt
Once completed, open the FSG.txt and search for "missing" or "corrupt"
- if you find any - this could be your problem.
ooops i take my words back on DB being exposed to two activities -
sorry guys.
