Re: Windows Server 2003 Firewall

You can. I like placing security as close as possible to the protected asset, so I probably would.

You can use the Security Configuration Wizard to generate and apply a security template that would permit the necessary ports and services.

I have an Exchange Server 2003 with SP2 running on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 (standalone server/not a DC). File/printer sharing isn't enabled. Basically this is a dedicated mail server in a local network behind a hardware firewall. The (LAN) clients are a mixed of Outlook 2002/2003/2007. OWA (accessed internally and from the internet) and ActiveSync are also used. Exchange aware antivirus is installed to protect the mail server.

Is it worth the trouble to enable Windows (server) firewall in my Exchange box? If so, I'm sure there are some exceptions (ports or applications) that I have to manually configure. What are they? Last, is it necessary to have (non exchange aware) antivirus in this scenario?
