so how large is the actual attachment? the restriction is on total message
size, not attachment size...smtp error code 5.2.3 means "Message length
exceeds administrative limit."...

This is the message that return the server with the SMTP size limit in 18
mb:
Failed to deliver to 'xxxxx@xxxxxxxxx'
SMTP module(domain xxxx.xxxxxx.com) reports:
return-path address <xxxxxx@xxxxxxxxx> rejected by server.xxxxx.com:
552 5.3.4 Message size exceeds fixed maximum message size
Original-Recipient: rfc822;<xxxxxx@xxxxxxxxxxx>
Final-Recipient: rfc822;<xxxxx@xxxxxxxxxx>
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0
But, if I disable the limit size in SMTP, there is another type of
message:
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
Delivery to the following recipients failed.
xxxx@xxxxxxxxxx
Final-Recipient: rfc822;xxxxx@xxxxxxxxxxx
Action: failed
Status: 5.2.3
X-Display-Name:
The question is: if there any way to know wich policy is blocking the
mails?
Thanks in advance.

Your limit is 18MB; how big was the attachment; there is bloating of
email size due to content conversion.
Gmail
Maximum attachment size
With Gmail, you can send and receive messages up to 20 megabytes (MB)
in size. However, the precise amount allowable will depend on the
attachment.

Yes, there's only one server and the NDR come from that one.

Dear Susan:
In fact, our server generated an NDR message and sent it to the
gmail
account.
Thanks again for all yoyr help

We have an Exchange 2003 upgraded from 5.5. Now, we're
trying to
change
the limit message size to 18 mb and we changed the SMTP
virtual
server,
the
connector, the defaults in Message Delivery, the user
defaults and
in
the
mailbox store properties: everywhere. But when we tried to
send an
from an external source (gmail for example), it is rejected
by the
message
"552 5.3.4 Message size exceeds fixed maximum message size".
The
question
is: is there any way to check what policy is rejecting the
messages,
or
if
there any key in the registry (maybe from 5.5) that we need
to
change
in
order to change the limit. We activated the smtp logs, but
it only
reported
552 error message and no clue. We did some internal test
and
worked
fine,
the trouble seems to be when receiving external mails.
Thanks for
all
your
help.
