Growing as in rapidly as in grew to 18Gb; how fast within hours?
Not within hours but within the same week.
That is what I am afraid is going to happen if I delete the empty stores.
What kind of looping issue could cause that to happen?
If that does happen, what are my recovery options?

Yes
If all databases share the same log file, how can I determine which database
they belong to? If it is a shared log doesn't it belong to all of them?
By using eseutil and ID'n the log file signature with the DB signature
(eseutil is an offline utility so DB must be dismounted)
The last time I dismounted the empty stores in the one and only storage
group on the server the logs grew to consume almost 18GB of drive space. I
remounted the stores and the log files went away.

If that's the case that's another issue; could be some looping issue
going on.

I guess I am not understanding this.

If I delete the stores and the log files start to grow again it won't be as
simple to fix as remounting the stores as they will have been deleted.

Yes databases in same storage group share the same log files of that
storage group E00; so the logs growing may be your others stores. You
can ID which database corresponds to which log file by comparing the
signatures.

James,
Thank you for the reply.
All the log files begin with E00 so all the mailbox stores share the same
log file??? When I dismounted the store the last time it was in the same
state it is in now - No users, just the SMTP and SystemMailbox and the log
files continued to grow until I remounted the old mailbox store.
I am concerned that if I delete the old store and .edb and .stm files
associated with it and the logs begin to grow again, I will not be able to
simply remount the store because it has been deleted.

Log files should not grow after you delete the database and all your
users have been rehomed to another store. When you did this last time;
all users were rehomed? Storage groups share log file location so it
could be your other stores generating the log files. Each store will
have it's own prefix for log files; you can check if it's growing for
a particular store.
"An Exchange server can have up to four storage groups, and the log
files for each storage group are distinguished by file names with
numbered prefixes (for example, E00, E01, E02, or E03). The log file
currently open for a storage group is simply named Enn.log—it does not
have a sequence number until it has been filled and closed."

Thanks Mark!
The only mailboxes shown in the old store I intend to delete are
SystemMailbox and SMTP.
I guess my only fear is that I will delete this store and then the log files
that are used for the actual store where the user mailboxes are will start to
grow again. I nearly ran out of disk space for the logs last time..

Hi all:
I would like to know what the consequences are if I delete an old mailbox
store that is located in the same storage group as the current mailbox store
that contains the users mailboxes. All mailboxes have been moved to the new
mailbox store, but since they are located in the same storage group they
share the same log files.
The reason why I am hesitent to delete these is because when I have
dismounted this store in the past, the log files for Exchange just kept
growing. When I re-mounted the old mailbox store, the log files decreased to
normal size.
We are running Exchange 2003 on an Windows 2003 server.
Thanks in advance for your assistance
If you're sure there's nothing left in the store you can stop it,
delete the store and then delete the files. If there are things still
in the store Exchange will prevent you, or at least tell you about it.- Hide quoted text -
