Re: Exchange database restore question - tg

Yes; it will know that it is RSG and redirect it to there.

"The Exchange Information Store automatically redirects all restore
operations to the Recovery Storage Group (if a Recovery Storage Group
exists on the server). When a Recovery Storage Group is created on a
server, Exchange checks to see if the database that is selected for
the restore operation is present in the Recovery Storage Group. If it
is present, the database files are restored to the Recovery Storage
Group. "

The documentation I have read said the RSG will be auto detected.  The
production store is set to NOT allow overwrite.  Others have said they were
paranoid the first time they did it but it just works if you have the RSG set
up.  After you do it the first time I guess you have confidence for the next
time.

i've not used NT backup to restore to an RSG...but you'll be prompted to
dismount the store, if it wants to restore to the production SG...I believe
it will detect the RSG  though...just double-check really quickly that your
production store does not have "this database can be overwritten by a
restore" selected, on the properties of the store...

Susan,
I have the Recovery Storage Group (RSG) setup and I am ready to restore
the
mailbox store.  However I am a little bit fearful.  Will the RSG be
detected
by NT Backup and my restore be pushed to the RSG?  Or will it restore it
to
the original location like it says in the backup window?  Or will it let
me
choose after I click "Start Restore"?  The article I am reading says it
will
be automatically detected but I would like a little reassurance.  I don't
want to restore over my on-line store (even though it might not let me
with
it mounted??)  Can you tell me what yours looks like?

"Susan" wrote:

that would be my recommendation...test restores are the only way to
verify
that your backups are usable/viable...Yes, use an RSG...they are great
for
that purpose...I use them all the time for recovery of email outside our
DIR
window...and mostly for testing that my backups are usable...finding out
they are not, when you're in a real DR situation, is not a happy thing...

That article shows the exact screen that I am seeing when I go to
restore
the
mailbox store.  So I guess that means I have been doing it correctly
all
along.  I may try restoring to a Recovery Storage Group to make sure
that
my
backups are solid.  What do you think about RSG's?

I see a section there that says "In case the catalog is not
displayed..."

We are backing up the Inf Store and System State data every day on
both
servers using NT Backup.  We are using the Exchange aware capability
of
NT
Backup, not doing a flat file backup.  Both of them show over 13Gb
of
data
backed up.  When I go into Restore and Manage Media in NT backup and
catalog
the backup file (I don't really have to catalog the backup file
unless
the
server has failed and have a fresh install) and go down thru the
backup
and
select the mailbox store it shows "no entries found".  I couldn't
believe
it.
I am freaking out.
The backup log says when it started and finished, 4 directories, 6
files,
13gb+ data, over some 25 minutes.  Looks good and normal to me.
thanks

were you backing up "Exchange/Information Store"?  or just doing a
flat-file
backup?  what do the log files on the backups say?

We have been running two Exch 2003 servers for quite some time
and I
use
NT
Backup to backup the Information Stores daily.  I also use
Exmerge
to
do a
brick level backup nightly.  We have never had a complete
Exchange
server
failure so I have never had to restore the entire Information
Store
from
the
backup.  Today I was running thru an Exchange 2003 Disaster
Recovery
article
and went into NT Backup/Restore and cataloged the backup file
that
ran
today
at lunch.  I was shocked when it showed "no entries found"..  My
backup
is
over 13Gb in size and it grows over time as more mail is added to
user
mailboxes.  What am I doing wrong?  Why can't I see my backed up
Mail
box
Store data?  Please HELP!!  I have checked the other server and
it
shows
the
same thing.  thanks already,  tom- Hide quoted text -
