Externally Emailing SharePoint Discussion List Fails?

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a SharePoint discussion list, which can be emailed
internally & externally. I've got it working internally but external
emails fail. I used the following PDF document to setup my sharepoint
& exchange server:

http://www.combined-knowledge.com/Downloads/How%20to%20configure%20Email%20Enabled%20Lists%20in%20Moss2007%20RTM%20using%20Exchange%202003.pdf

So that I could email the list externally I had to add another SMTP
address to my lists contact properties. So I followed the intructions
in the PDF (copied below) and opened my discussion list contact
properties, and added discusslist@xxxxxxxxxx to the existing SMTP
address which is discusslist@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

--------------------
The default e-mail address will be fanmail@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
as this is what we configured the mail addresses to be in MOSS2007
central administration – operations – incoming e-mail settings earlier
in this document. This is fine for internal mail but if I wanted to
have external fans from all over the world mail the library so I need
to use a global company address. I.e.fanmail@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I have two options to manage this.

Option 1 – Go into the properties of this contact and add a new SMTP
mail address under the e-mail addresses tab for @trainsbydave.com. You
will have to do this for each contact created.

Option 2 – Create a new Exchange Server Global recipient policy so
that all contacts created in that OU Automatically get the second mail
address added.
------------------

However, I can now email internally to both addresses, and sharepoint
adds the emails to the discussion list, but externally it fails. It
looks like the emails come in OK, and they even reach the exchange
server (according to the message tracking center), however, where as
an internal email going through the exchange server is successful, an
external one fails. An example of 2 message histories is below, the
first is a successful message internally:

...<snip>...
SMTP: Message Categorized and Queued for Routing
SMTP: Started Outbound Transfer of Message
SMTP: Message Routed and Queued for Remote Delivery
Message transfered to domain.com through SMTP

The external message history shows:

...<snip>...
SMTP: Message Categorized and Queued for Routing
SMTP: Non-Delivery Report (NDR) Generated

I don't understand how both internal & external messages, going to the
same email address, through the same exchange server, can end with one
being successful, and one failing!?

Any help would be appreciated

Ben
