Automatically Created Multiple E-Mail Addresses

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I am running a single domain - w2k3 server, e2k3

I set up the user accounts as firstname.lastname@xxxxxxxxxx which works fine.

Months later, I noticed that there were multiple variations of the e-mail
address on each user account. For example, now there is also
firstnamelastname@xxxxxxxxxx, and firstinitiallastname@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Why are these variations being created? And why are the defaults being
changed?

Thanks.
