Re: Exchange server 2003 SP2 Database

Don't delete the system from sytem manager. Why don't you use a
disasterrecovery build?

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124429.aspx

What's on C:? A typical small installation of Exchange needs 6 spindles;

a mirror for the OS
a mirror for the logs
a mirror for the databases

Where are you puttingthe logs?

Hi John,
Thanks a lot for your help in this matter. To avoid future
problem and increase storage capacity we have decided to install new hard
drives with bigger capacity but will impose storage and mailbox
limitations.
This is our only one back end exchange server. The data is on D drive. I
am
planning to take NT back of entire system store on external bigger hard
drive. I forget to mention that C drive is also running low on space. So
we
have decided to rebuild the whole server. After taking the system store
backup I will delete the name of this back end Exchange Server from system
manager and install new hard drives, format the C drive and install
Windows
Server 2003 SP2 and Exchange Server 2003 SP2. When server is ready restore
the system store from NT Backup. I will keep the same name of the server.

Would you advise me any thing I should or should not be doing so that I
can
successfully restore this Back End Exchange Server? I have not done this
before that is why I am super cautious.

Thanks a lot.

George

If you have 130 users, an 700mb mailbox limit, and 2 weeks deleted items
retention, you'll end up with a db size of about 110GB.

Hi,
Thanks for replying. We have total 136 BG Drive Size and remaing
space
left is 30 GB if I set storage limit of 110 GB do you think that will
work.

Ever heard of limits? You can't size effectively without them. Even
if
you
state that you have no limits, you are still constrained by the
ultimate
limit; the size of storage. You don't want to hit that one.

To solve your problem work with your business units to define limits
based
on business objectives. This approach has the advantage of justifying
the
cost of storing the mail in the process. Once you work this out,
impose
limits. Your store will quit growing when the limits are reached.

Hello,
We have Exchange Server 2003 SP2 running in our organizations.
There
is FE/BE configuration and we also have Barcuda SPAM Filter. We had
around
60-70 mail boxes two months ago and in last two months the number of
mailboxes has gone upto 130 due to company expansion. I have seen
tremendous
amount of .edb and .stm file growth and also transaction logs. The
data
base
is growing 3 GB daily. The transaction log file is being deleted
every
night
by backup program but .edb and .stm file are growing every day. The
total
data base size is around 100 GB.

I don't see much data in newly created mailboxes. But some old
mailboxes
are
big like 1, 2 ,4,5, 6 BG. I am afraid the drive space is going to
fill
up
in
couple of days. MY question is that from where this much mail is
coming
up. I
don't see much messages in queues getting stacked and spam is also
at
normal
level when there were 60-70 mail boxes?.
I also see online defragmentation starts each night but some times
it
does
not complete and some times I see it is resuming where it was left.

Can any body help what needs to be done?
