Online backups do back up the dumpster, since the process just backs up the database file and then the log files. Of course, that's a simplification of the process, but suffice it to say that online backup does not go through the database on an item-by-item basis, and therefore there's no way it can skip items in the dumpster.

I apologize, I thought from things we'd tried similar to the original poster, that the restored database didn't have any "dumpster" items. I guess I thought the backups only took the active data out of the database and that anything in the dumpster area was somehow marked as not needed.

I'm pretty sure your normal online backups do NOT back up the "dumpster" items. Since the hard deleted items weren't backed up, they're not recoverable from the restored/recovered database.

Hi Gurus,

I need to restore some emails that the user hard deleted from the inbox last
year (longer than my retention).

After I restore the database, I use EXMERGE with the "Items on dumpster"
switch to recover to a pst. The recovered PST is not is not bringing the hard
deleted items from Inbox.

The user told me he use to hard delete the items on the same day he
received, but now he needs the emails urgently.

Is there a compliance tool that is capable of connecting to the Recovery
Storage Group and bring the Inbox Hard Deleted Items? or a tool that can read
the exchange database file, and bring the Inbox hard deleted items?

Thanks a lot,

.
