Re: how to open archive sink created MAPI .eml files?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Just archiving all mail this way to keep an emergency record of all emails
sent (on top of disaster recovery backups).

Had a couple of incidents recently where someone has said something to a
client and the email has mysteriously dissapeared, and it's cost us dearly.
Mostly likely deleted as soon as sent, so wouldn't be included in a nightly
backup.

This seems the quickest and cheapest (read free) solution to have every
email sent internally and externally available if required. Written a
couple of scripts that sort to a large NAS, them and archive them to tape
after a certain time and remove them.

Just pre-empting the requirement to actually read the emails if the
situation ever arises rather than posting this question with a 5 minute
deadline :) Don't worry, we know the law on monitoring email etc.

testing the app now, it shows the header of the .eml's (same as OE does) but
until i get a licence I don't know if it's working for the content. Tried a
few other TNEF readers, but mostly, they've failed to read the .EML files at
all.

thanks
alex

You need to enable 'MAPI-Gateway Messages' then to open these messages
you need a tnef encoder. Whats the goal for using this?

Any ideas what I use to open and view archived emails (.eml files) created
from a Exchange 2k3 server Archive Sink?

I just use Outlook Express to open the archived SMTP (internet trafffic)
.eml files, but using OE to open the MAPI .eml files just results in
showing
the headers and not the actual content (text or attachments). Actually,
tell a lie, very occasionally (1 out of 20) of them display correctly.

I seemed to remember that to read the archived files from Exchange 5.5 you
opened them as .uue files with winrar or something, but I've also tried
this
and they're not recognised as that file type.
