Re: Setup IMAP on Exchange 2003 for i-phone

So I'm not cracking up! This looks good. I'll get with the firewall guy
and see about opening up 143.
Looks like everything is set like you say, just not the firewall.

I agree on the Blackberry! Sad part is we do have them here for the execs
and IT. They have approved others to use them if they purchase their own.
Only one person has taken them up on it.

Thanks for the help!
Mark

P.S. Love the name!!

Good morning!

I have a few users who would like to use their i-phones to connect to
the exchange server for e-mail.

Ah, of course. And you can't convince them to exchange their shiny toys
for Blackberries or Windows Mobile devices which don't require clunky
manual syncing via cable, of course! Don't get me wrong - iPhones are nice
for some things, but until there's an Activesync option I don't view them
as all that great for business use.

My problem is that I have never messed with IMAP and have no idea how
to make it work.
Is there something out there to get me started?

There really shouldn't be too much to this -

Everything I find is
for 2007 or expects you to already have it set up.

You (mostly) do already.

I got the service enabled and started.

That's good -

Is that all there is to it? I feel like there should be more....not
seeing anything IMAP related in IIS.

No - look in Exchange System Manager and make sure the IMAP virtual server
is started in there.

I seem to remember something about needing a connector, but that
could just be flashbacks from 5.5.

I'm guessing I'll need another hole in the firewall for this.

Yep - TCP 143 (unless you're forcing SSL on this).

Then at the phone itself. Would I use the same address as the
webmail to get in?

Yes.... whatever.yourdomain.com

Or would it be something like
imap.domainname/exchange?

No, not unless you manually set up an A record for that.

I have a single Exchange 2003 SP2 server running Native mode on a
Windows 2003 SP2 standard server
Using the SMTP connector

That's for your outbound mail, so it won't apply here.

Webmail is online

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You'll need to make sure the users authenticate to the SMTP server for
outbound mail (and make sure auth relay is still enabled in your virtual
SMTP server).

Thank you
Mark
