Re: Final step in Exchange 5.5 to 2003 migration but one last ques

I was successfully able to delete two of the old Exchange 5.5 servers from
the site, since they did not show any mailboxes or public folders in use,
which is accurate. The inconsistency is only for one server, which also had
an SMTP connector installed. So it looks like it thinks there are 50 or so
mailboxes and public folders still on this one obsolate server. If none of
the options in my last post were good, what about using the ADC to update the
Exchange 5.5 directory? Is there any way to use it to over-write the
inconsistencies? Or for the Exchange 5.5 directory to sync with AD?

Our exchange replication was not in sync with AD when we moved all our
mailboxes and public folders over to Exchange 2003. Now we have a full AD
site with Exchange 2003 and there are no more public folders or mailboxes on
any of the Exchange 5.5 servers. However we still need to keep one last
Exchange 5.5 server for an efax application, but it is only for the
directory, no mailboxes are used. However because of the lack of sync with
AD/Exchange 5.5 directory, the Exchange 5.5 recipients show many users who
are in reality now located on Exchange 2003, but still show as if their
mailboxes are on Exchange 5.5. AD is completely accurate, but the Exchange
5.5 directory is now. If I try to delete one of the Exchange 5.5 servers
from the Exchange 5.5 admin app, I get the warning that any remaining
mailboxes will be deleted.

My question is if Exchange 5.5 thinks there are still mailboxes on Exchange
5.5, if I delete a server will that cause any replication into AD and cause
potential problems deleting real user mailboxes on Exchange 2003? We have
the ADC running and SRS still operational. I just don't want to delete a
server and then have a replication event happen and cause deletion of
mailboxes on Exchange 2003. I know its probably not even a possability, but
if anyone knows how this would work in theory, please get back to me.

One of my thoughts was to delete the Exchange 5.5 servers we don't need in
AD using ADSIEDIT, since that would free up some of the MTA and small
annoyances of leaving the Exchange 5.5 servers in the site. I could leave
the required Exchange 5.5 server as is, and it won't know the difference.
But the junk would be cleaned up from AD/Exchange 2003. Any thoughts?

Dang . . . hit the "Send" button too fast.

I meant to continue on by saying that you should find the objects in
the 5.5 directory that think the mailbox still exists on the 5.5
server. You can move them to the E2K3 server. They're probably
left-over ghosts of employees long departed. Once they're in the AD
you can delete them safely, and then delete the 5.5 servers.
