I have implemented Edge Services and in fact use it now. But I'm not real
crazy about it as an anti-spam device. I think it's best value is just being
able to offload SMTP traffic to it. Of course, as with any other anti-spam
solution, it's all in how you "tweak" the filter settings. For me, it's a
hassle to constantly try to configure it to properly balance blocking spam
versus high rates of false positives. It seems that just when you think
you've got it right, a new wave of spam hits that makes you go right back to
the drawing board.

Of course every environment is different, as is the type of mail they
receive; but in my humble opinion, I believe you'd be disappointed if an Edge
server was your only method of blocking spam.

outsourcing where possible, because it reduces your administrative burden
quite a bit; and with spam you're always trying to play "catch-up."

If you are set on managing your own solution in house, I'd suggest IronPort.
It has the best performance and is by far the most accurate anti-spam engine
I've seen (Brightmail).

Of the outsourced services I've used (and currently use), I definitely
prefer MessageLabs. You may not get quite the granular control that you have
with other solutions, but you will likely find that it is not necessary.
Message delivery is very fast and does exactly what it's supposed to - block
spam and virtually eliminate false positives. Like IronPort, MessageLabs uses
the Brightmail engine, which I didn't realize until after we already signed
up for the service.
