I am trying to allow a few outside users to connect via POP3 to our
exchange server.

They are connecting with Outlook 2003. It works from inside the
firewall so I am pretty sure that it's a firewall issue. From outside
of the firewall I can telnet via port 110 and log into the server. So
it would seem like Outlook should be able to do the same. However,
when we set up a POP3 account in Outlook it can not log into the
server i.e. test account and the Unable to log onto POP3 server and no
test message sent message comes up.

Let me know if there is another port that should be opened up or if
there are any other possible causes.

Thanks

POP3 is only for receiving. You will need SMTP open (TCP 25) and for
that to be properly secured to allow the users who authenticate to
submit and relay, but not anyonmous users.

Questions though.
Why POP3 if your users are on Outlook 2003?

Thanks for the response.
We went with POP3 because syncing calendars etc.. is not a huge need
and I thought POP3 would be the easiest for remote users to set up.
I would be happy to do IMAP or something if you have some detail. I
don't think we can do exchange over http as the box is exchange 2000.
We have port 25 open and we can log in via that port. I still get a
POP3 when setting up the connection in Outlook.

If I ignore the test message errors I can send email I just don't seem
to receive anything. Thanks again and let me know what you think.
