Thanks for not getting mad at me. A couple of good books will benefit you a
whole lot more than the short-question-and-answer forum here. Please do
come back and post any questions you might have.

Thanks for your prompt response and information, Ed. You are correct. I
am an Exchange Administrator beginner. It is a job that was assigned to
me even though I did not want it.
Thanks.

Security groups can be used for permissions. That's the only difference.
You really need to give yourself some education because the questions you
are asking are extremely basic. I recommend that you pick up a book on
Windows Server administration right away and start with that, and then an
Exchange book like the one written by fellow MVP Jim McBee.

Thank you very much for your prompt response, Ed.
I want to create a group name and put some of the users in that group.
I want the users to be able to send email messages to that group name.
Please let me know if I have not answered your question.
Can you tell me the difference between a distribution and security
groups?
Thanks.

The only way to create a group name is to create a distribution or
security group and name it. Is that what you mean? You create a group
in Active Directory Users and Computers, and under Exchange Tasks give
it an e-mail address if you want it mail-enabled. If you can't
mail-enable it, then you need to install the Exchange 2000 Management
Tools on the console on which you're running ADU&C, and to do that, you
run Exchange 2000 setup and select only the management tools. Don't
forget to apply the service pack.
You cannot create groups in Exchange System Manager.

We are running Active Directory on Windows 2003 server and Exchange
2000 on Windows 2000 server. We want to add a group name in Exchange.
Can we go to Active Directory for Users and Computers to create a
group name or do we need to use Exchange Administrator to create a
group name? If we create a group name in Exchange, does it also
create a group name in Active Directory?
Thanks.
Diane
