It depends on how the application is sending the message. If you're sending
via MAPI, as you would if you used Outlook normally, the display name of the
user object owning the mailbox would be the "friendly name". If your
application is sending using SMTP, then I believe that the friendly name the
applicaton supplies in the From: header would be displayed.

I have a weird issue with my Exchange 2003 server:
We have an account called "Orders."
It's display name is "Orders" and the email address is
orders@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
When we send emails internally the display name shows up as Orders in
Outlook.
This is also the account that we use for order confirmations from our
online store.
When the online store gets and order is sends a confirmation email to
the customer, orders@xxxxxxxxxxxx and a few other addresses. It also
uses that same address as the from address.
Until yesterday, these emails had a display name that read "Xxxxxxxx
Store"
Now, the customers get the correct display name, but somehow internal
address' get switched to say "orders".
I know I could just update the display name to say "Xxxxxxxx Store",
but my boss uses the display name to sort out the email confirmations
from other "Orders" communications.
How can I fix this?
